During the opening reception of the 2011 Dominion Conference held at the Brockville Rowing Club, Manitoba Branch invited everyone to attend the 2012 Conference in Winnipeg by performing a rousing ballad to the tune of 'Red River Valley'..

2012 Invitation Lyrics

To this valley we hope you are coming

We will welcome you in true Prairie style

For they say Loyalists at Hotel Fort Garry

Will be a conference very worthwhile.

From the East and the West you’ll be coming

You will love our great sites and kind smiles

We will swat huge mosquitoes for you

And laugh with you all the while.

Come and tour at the lower Fort Garry

Under skies of deep azure blue

And remember the Red River Settlers

Some of whom were Loyalists too.

Our big skies and vast prairie vistas

Are well known across this great land,

But we also have a desert and forests

and many lakes with lovely white sand.

From your room you will soon be agazing

At the Forks and the rivers that meet

The Conference will be so amazing

You will want to stay for a week!

Conference at the Confluence will be so engaging

We will welcome friends both old and new

And we hope all the plans we have hewn

Are enough to entice you next June!

Lower Fort Garry, Winnipeg, circa 1848

From the early 19th century to the 1870s, Lower Fort Garry was the administrative and military centre of the Canadian Prairies.  British troops were first stationed there during 1846-1848, at the time this illustration of the fort was made by H.J. Photograph of Little Britain United Church, established in 1874

Little Britain began in the 1820's, when six former Hudson's Bay Company servants and their families, all related by blood or marriage, settled on narrow river lots in the area between Lower Fort Garry and Lockport.

Why “Little Britain”?

River lots on the east and west side of the Red River between Lower Fort Garry and St. Andrew’s rapids (now Lockport) were settled by mostly English, Orkney, and Scottish families and hence dubbed “Little Britain”..

The Forks

The Forks is a historic site and meeting place in Downtown Winnipeg located at the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River.  For at least 6000 years, the Forks has been the meeting place for early Aboriginal peoples, and since colonization has also been a meeting place for European fur traders, Métis buffalo hunters, Scottish settlers, riverboat workers, railway pioneers and tens of thousands of immigrants.

 Dalnavert Museum website

The objective of Dalnavert Museum, a designated National Historic Site of Canada, is to foster an appreciation and an understanding of the late Victorian era in Winnipeg, through the preservation, exhibition and interpretation of the building and the museum’s collection.

-- : Sir Hugh John Macdonald : 1850 - 1929 : --Dalnavert is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne Revival architecture.  It is the restored 1895 home of Sir Hugh John Macdonald, lawyer, Premier of Manitoba in 1900, later Police Magistrate for Winnipeg, and son of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.  A chronology of the house is available here.  Like similar well-to-do family homes of the period, Dalnavert is opulently decorated and full of treasured objects.

 NunsuchThe Nunsuch Gallery

at the Manitoba Museum

Originally built in England in 1968, the Nonsuch was a replica of the original ship, whose 1668 voyage led to the founding of the Hudson's Bay Company.

HBC commissioned the replica as a celebration of the company's 300th anniversary in 1970, and as a gift to the Province of Manitoba for its 100th anniversary.

Set amid the waterfront of 17th century England in the Museum, the original two-masted ketch Nonsuch sailed into Hudson Bay in search of furs

In 1670, two years after the initial voyage of the Nonsuch, the Hudson's Bay Company was formed and the famed little ship was instrumental in establishing commerce in western Canada.                                           Nonsuch Gallery at the Manitoba Museum

: 2011 Catch the Spirit Conference Schedule and Itinerary :The 2011 UELAC Dominion Conference, 'Catch the Spirit', is now a warm memory.

Hosted by Colonel Edward Jessup Branch, Brockville Ontario was the temporary home for Loyalists from across Canada and 'Catch the Spirit' was enthusiastically received by all.

For many, this was their first visit to the Thousand Islands region of Ontario and the Friday night dinner cruise on the St. Lawrence River was a memorable experience.  For others, it evoked fond memories and a chance to learn more about the history of this unique area.

But as with all Dominion Conferences, it was an opportunity for Loyalists and friends to enjoy the warm camaraderie which is part and parcel of the Association.  Along with the tours, the seminars, the meetings and the quiet conversations, the friends both met and made have become an extended family.

As we look eagerly to Manitoba Branch hosting 'Conference at the Confluence 2012' in Winnipeg, we acknowledge the hard work and many hours of planning that go into organizing an event such as a National Conference.  We offer our thanks and appreciation to each and every Branch that steps up to the challenge and know that a friendly welcome and warm hospitality will always be waiting for us.

So mark the dates, make the reservations and see you in Winnipeg in June of 2012!
